The Montserrat Font project was first designed by Julieta Ulanovsky in 2010; in 2017 Google commissioned Sol Matas and Juan Pablo del Peral to develop the Cyrillic expansion. The greatest challenge was remaining faithful to the original Argentine inspiration of Montserrat Font while creating a design that looked natural in the Cyrillic context.
